Why your boiler works less after a flush
Sludge narrows the pipes, so the boiler runs flat out for less heat. See what changes once the water flows freely again.

Over the years, black sludge (magnetite) and debris settle in your pipes and radiators. Left in, it’s carried straight into the new boiler, where it can clog and damage the heat exchanger.
Building Regulations guidance (Approved Document L) says a heating system should be thoroughly cleaned and flushed before a new boiler is fitted, then treated with inhibitor, following the British Standard BS 7593.
Boiler manufacturers usually expect the system to be cleaned before their boiler goes in, and it’s recorded on the Benchmark checklist that comes with it.
With clean water flowing freely, the new boiler doesn’t have to work as hard. Radiators heat evenly, the house warms up faster, it’s easier on your bills, and the boiler lasts longer.
Why not just a quick flush? A quick flush only runs water through. A powerflush uses a dedicated machine, cleaning chemicals and strong, reversed flow through each radiator in turn to shift the sludge that has settled.
